Mental Competency in Propensity to Self-Subversion

Self-subversion is the mechanism that helps us to know our mind’s capabilities. How many of us have really stopped to know what goes in our minds? Is it not important for us to know what is happening within a mystical part of us that controls our senses and behavior?

Understanding our mind will lead to us to many unanswered questions like why we do a particular thing or why we avoid something or why we react in the way we do and so on. The answers to these questions will help us to transform into better human beings.

We are influenced by external as well as internal events. The internal events can be our past experiences while the external events are those that are happening in the world around us. They have an impact on our thoughts and behavior. It also subconsciously affects our emotional balance. We become agitated and disturbed for the so-called insignificant things. We say and do things that we repent and regret later. This is because we have not addressed the root cause of our emotional disturbance.

Emotional balance and tranquility is of utmost importance to every human being today. With so many irrational acts happening around us, it also becomes imperative that we give it the importance that is due. Many crimes happen due to emotional instability of people. They are unable to decide what is good and what is bad for them. They let external forces take over their minds. This emotional instability is due to the lack of knowledge about their mental health. If they can predict that their reaction to an event is going to be unpleasant, then they can avoid that event altogether.

We have to take steps to understand our mind. We have to address the emotional questions and fears that plague us. We must agree that the issues we face today are based on cause and effect, sources and consequences. By analyzing and understanding the root cause of these fears and questions, we can have a better grip over ourselves.

In order to overcome a problem, we have to dig deep down to know the cause and the effect it has on us. We can know this by concentrating on our inner-self. Meditation is one of the techniques for achieving this. It helps to focus all our attention on a single object or thought. This will provide us with an opportunity to do a lot of self-introspection. We can gauge our emotional levels and attachments.

Once we know our problems, we can steps to tackle them. We have to make determined efforts to overcome them. In due course of time and with persistence, we can mould ourselves into better individuals.

Our past experiences will throw a lot of light in our emotional growth. Spending a little time everyday to think and scrutinize our actions and reactions in the past will help us to achieve a higher degree of emotional balance and tranquility.

As our emotional balance increases, we will be in a better position to handle all the negative and unpleasant events that happen around us. We can decide what events should get to us and what should be filtered. That way we can shut out all the negative forces that influence us from our life.
This will lead to self-reliance and self-confidence. We can stop negative external forces like violence, crime, abuse, racism, war, poverty and others from influencing us in any way. When we are self-reliant and confident, we can motivate others to join us.

When each person consciously strives towards emotional stability and self-reliance, the world will be a happier place to live. Learn to meditate often.

Propensity to Self Subversion Living The Life

Being Subversive is usually has negative associations and subversive people are often seen as destructively intent on changing “normal” or comfortable ways of life.  However, being subversive really just means that someone is living outside of the box and diverging from societal norms.  The only negative or evil that comes from this is when individuals or groups express their different views with malicious destruction or forcible insistence.  Subversion itself is merely the desire to change. Wanting to move beyond boundaries and self-imposed limits is a true propensity to self-subversion.

Change can be daunting at any point but especially so when it is unexpected.  For self-subversion to be effective, you have to take your time and allow yourself to make changes gradually.  Allow yourself time to explore and process new thoughts and behaviors to be accepted or rejected at your own pace. A person who is looking to cultivate self-subversion needs to understand and accept that everything they have been taught is normal is actually subject to change. This includes everything from interpersonal relationships to how you live your life day to day.  Being self-subversive means that you are willing to explore new ideas and behaviors to the fullest extent.

Self-subversion should not be attempted while under severe emotional, physical or psychological stress. This can lead to changes that you are not prepared for thereby creating disastrous end results. When you choose the path, you want to explore, make sure that you are prepared for any results that may come about.  Take into consideration each eventuality so that you are not left without a support system if things do not go according to plan.

Remember that while change is happening you may have unexpected insights that reveal things to you that you never considered. Be ready to look to these revelations with an open mind and remember that it is your choice whether to accept or reject them. In any case, self-subversion takes time, dedication and an open mind to make it work.  It can be a long and difficult process and it is definitely not for everyone. It takes certain strength to be able to pull your self away from what is widely believed as acceptable and to handle the ridicule that may come along with venturing down the path less traveled.

A self-subversive person has to be able to live with themselves. They have to willingly cast off conventional norms and strive for a more self-fulfilling answer. However, this is not to say that people need to push self-subversion as a way of life for them. If you are unwillingly pursuing self-subversion then you are defeating the goal of developing a heightened sense of self.

Subversion is derived from the Latin word "subvertere" in which means to "to crush" or to "turn from masked below the subliminal mind. When we turn over the colorless shadows in our mind, it promotes negative thinking. Subverting is besides give aforethought a colorless activity, something that is to be avoided, connoting a mishap of the class equal exchange.

Yet debating the characterizations itself, subversion is not necessary something we must ignore. Analytically the class equal exchange of self-subversion has always been discouraged by the authorities (in a political arena) seeing that it usually means they have to justify their actions and reveal their or ambitions, also most of the time that is not a very good idea from their point of view. Despite the many refutes we have the power to delve into propensity to self-subversion.

Propensity to Self-Subversion: The Politics of Identity

It is almost instinct for people who share similar likes and interests to bond together and form a group more easily than those with nothing in common. It is for this reason that girls who love certain types of fashion bond together, while science geniuses form clubs, all of which are easily seen in most schools. Dentists form their own associations in the same way roller coaster engineers have their own organizations. The basic need of wanting to belong is a fundamental component of most people’s genetic make-up, and it is through this desire that many collective identity groups are formed. Unfortunately, while this may seem beneficial at the onset, there still runs the risk of self-subversion, even within these circles.

While it is true that most groups formed are because its members share a similar interest or occupation, it does not necessarily follow that all the members have exactly the same likes and dislikes, and therein lays the problem. While it is true that two people of the same gender, race, religion and age bracket can share a common experience, it does not always follow that they share an identical experience. Unfortunately, many people tend to generalize and lump all these experiences under one category without giving much through to further distinguishing one from the other.

To illustrate – there are many gay rights organizations where homosexuals advocating equal rights belong to, and it is assumed that they all have the same definitions regarding what it is to be a homosexual. Subsequently, if the majority of the members prefers men, but still exhibits many masculine traits characteristic of a typical straight man, then this becomes the dominant precept that everyone within the organization should follow. If one of the members exhibits traits that are more feminine or is a transvestite, then that member can be ostracized, even in the community that he shares common interests in. This is the problem of the politics that arise in determining one’s identity.

As a result, the member is not given a chance to voice his own opinions and thoughts, even within the community. The fact that most similar organizations are formed in order to combat the inequality they perceive to be experiencing or have experienced with other members of society, this is, ironically enough, a form of bigotry in itself. The organizations seek to establish acceptance within society, yet is unable to tolerate one of their own for exhibiting qualities or interests that most of the group do not have.

In consequence, a homogenous culture is inadvertently established among the member of the community. People are forced to conform to the views of the majority; making a stance against them will result in their being alienated. With this in mind, it is still very important to be able to associate distinct and distinguishing personalities even within a certain organization, as no two members are ever alike. Setting boundaries based on the majority’s opinion will only result in excluding other people.

Sadly, enough, many people choose to keep quiet about their differences and participate, because the need to belong to a society where you can be tolerated supersedes the need to express yourself and risk being ostracized. This is in fact, the reason why many homosexuals choose to keep quiet about their sexual orientation, or why some people take drugs if the people all around them are doing so. Self-subversion forces you actually believe that it is okay to sacrifice your personality for the sake of finding acceptance among your peers. It becomes important to find enough self-confidence to stand up for what you believe in, and perhaps even exact changes among the members of the collective you belong to, in order to get rid of the many misconceptions that can lead to personal identity crisis.

Propensity to Self-subversion: The Exit Strategy

The desire to belong is a typical need inherent in many individuals in society today. The act of conforming to the ideals and behaviour that people expect of others, thereby restricting the sense of individual freedom and the right to free expression, is often done because the person relishes basking in the approval of other people. By doing so, the person experiences a form of self-subversion – of giving up on one’s personal characteristics and values to be able to be a “part of the crowd”, and to seek other people’s acceptance. This is not necessarily a negative trait, especially when following society’s rules advocates the greater good, such as compliance towards the laws of the state. However, it becomes counterproductive when the individual’s right to personal freedom becomes suppressed.

When people are aware of the growing decline in the organizations and associations that they perceive they belong to, either due to a marked decrease in quality and a lack of financial growth, or due to their belief that their opinions are being suppressed by the majority, then one of the possible consequences is to exit the particular organization. This is a form of self-subversion; unable to withstand the demands being exacted of him, or unable to reap the benefits from staying in the current situation, a person may choose to leave and pursue their interests elsewhere. This is often an attempt by many to voice their disapproval of how a particular situation or society is being run, and is not allowed the ability to speak up and express his thoughts about the matter.

As an example, consider a country that advocates certain ideals and beliefs, or engages in practices such as corruption, that the citizen disapproves of. While he could attempt to voice out his dislike, there may be circumstances wherein the political climate of the country is such that he runs the risk of endangering himself or his family should he choose to stand up for his beliefs and defy his government. Unwilling to take that chance and possibly lose his life for it, the citizen may now opt for the next best recourse that he can do, which is to leave the country. In this manner, the citizen’s rights are being suppressed by the government, but the former is also able exact a certain revenge. By choosing to migrate to another country, the citizen is depriving the government of any positive assets and contributions that he can make to the state. If enough of the population follows this citizen’s solution, then the country will suffer as a whole from a form of “brain drain”, the lack of human resources to help improve the country.

There are still however, some cases where physical leaving the country cannot be possible. The citizen, for instance, may not have the necessary credentials or finances to afford an exodus to another country. And may be forced to remain... while laws may prevent him from physically exiting the country, he may still choose to “exit” through other means. This involves choosing not to exercise his right to vote during elections, refusing to take part in any activities that the government has planned, or even encouraging or participating in groups that seek to overthrow the government – basically, anything he wilfully does that is detrimental to the government’s cause and growth.

Notwithstanding, this type of exit strategy may have just as much negative effects as physically leaving the county, sometimes even greater. Leaving the country limits the person’s ability to do further after migrating, but remaining and encouraging methods to help eliminate or put down the government will affect the country on a wider scale. This is a form of self-subversion simply because the citizen is convincing himself that he is doing what is best for the people, either through a lack of participation, or active interest in groups that seek to fight the government he finds oppressive. In the end however, he may wind up doing much more damage not only to himself, but also to his fellow citizens, as the economic and political stability of the country worsens.
